During the 20th century, it became apparent that studying geometric
spaces was best achieved by studying the algebras of functions on those
spaces. Classically, all such algebras are commutative, but if we forget
about the original space and try to apply the same ideas, we end up with
a form of 'non-commutative' geometry. This sheds light on lots of
different geometric constructions, and in particular may underpin a
rigorous explanation of the so-called Mirror Symmetry conjecture first
made by physicists working on string theory. Friday 14th November, 7.30 pm Talk SPEAKER MEETINGCMS MR5 "Professor Stewart's Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities" by Professor Ian Stewart
The legendary Ian Stewart discusses the mathematics that has most piqued his
interest and caught his imagination since he was 14. The talk promises to be
packed with interesting problems and amusing anecdotes. Not to be missed!
Talk is free to members, 1 pound for non-members.
We are dining with the speaker after the talk. If you would like to join us please email archim-ents@srcf.ucam.org asap. Friday 31st October, 7.30 pm Talk SPEAKER MEETINGCMS MR5 Practical Stochastic Financial Modelling: Being A Mathmo In The City By Mr Colin Prue
- Intro to problem: deriving a scheme to automatically delta (and rho + vega) hedge a type of insurance product.
- Intro to hedging at a high level, what the firm wanted to do,brief discussion of risk and the costs of protection.
- Intro to risk-neutral valuation (SFM) from a market rather than classroom point of view. Chat about mathematics of delta hedging.
- Calibration of economic scenario models to market prices.
- Stochastic simulation as the City's answer to difficult stochastic integrals.
